Clavichord by Arnold Dolmetsch N°212, Haslemere 1941

We are pleased to offer for sale this fine clavichord by Arnold Dolmetsch, completed in Haslemere in 1941, the year after Arnold's death, with charming soundboard decoration by Mabel Dolmetsch.

This instrument comes with a nice provenance coming from the family of Layton Ring, a noted early music enthusiast & performer, and previously being owned by Ruth Daniells, a founder member of the Viola da Gamba society - both closely associated with the Dolmetsch family and the revival of early music.

This clavichord has a compass of 4 octaves & 2 notes (C - d³). The case is in walnut and rests on a trestle stand also in walnut. The keyboard is in lime with ebony naturals, ivory capped sharps and gilded keyfronts. The soundboard is in spruce and carries decoration of flowers and foliage within a blue scalloped border, and the lid bears the French proverb ′Plus Fait Douceur Que Violence′

The nameboard inscription reads: ′Arnold Dolmetsch MCMXLI′

Overall height: 29½ (775mm).

This instrument is tuned to a¹=440.

This instrument has been fully restored in our workshops.

This clavichord was sold in Summer 2021.
