Square Piano by Charles Dierkes, London c.1825
We are pleased to offer for sale this elegant square piano by Charles Dierkes, who was active as an instrument maker in London for only a short while between 1810 and 1825.
This square piano has a compass of 5½ octaves (FF - c4) with a double action, mopstick dampers and pedal operated sustain. The case is in mahogany with mahogany crossbanding and black line inlays with a brass moulding, the rounded corners carrying an inlaid foliate design. The instrument stands on 4 turned and reeded legs with brass castors and collars. The keywell is veneered in rosewood with a box inlay, the nameboard bearing an inlaid cartouche with the maker's inscription and fretwork panels. The original green painted ′dust-cover′ is present.
The nameboard inscription reads: ′Charles Dierkes ⁄ Piano Forte Maker ⁄ N°7 Percy Street ⁄ Bedford Square ⁄ London′
Dimensions: 66¾ × 25¼ × 10¾″ (1695 × 640 × 275mm) approx.
Overall height: 32¼ (820mm).
This instrument is tuned to a¹=415.
