Square Piano by Muzio Clementi & Co. N°8761, London c.1810
We are pleased to offer for sale this fine square piano by Muzio Clementi made in London c.1810.
This square piano has a compass of 5½ octaves (FF - c4) with a double action, Irish dampers and pedal operated sustain.
The case is in mahogany with a simple black line inlay, and the instrument sits on an undertray with three drawers, brass moulding and roses, and six turned and reeded legs with brass castors and collars. The original green silk-covered ′dust-cover′ is present.
The nameboard bears a painted cartouche with the maker's inscription and fretwork panels. The serial number 8761 is stamped to the left of the keyboard, and the wrestplank bears the number 10400 in ink.
The nameboard inscription reads: ′New Patent ⁄ Muzio Clementi & Co. ⁄ Cheapside, London′.
Dimensions: 66 × 23⅜ × 9⅛″ (1675 × 592 × 231mm) approx.
Overall height: 35 (890mm).
This instrument is tuned to a¹=415.
