Square Piano by Goulding, Phipps & D’Almain N° 259, London c.1800
5 octaves, single action, overhead dampers, lever operated sustain. Mahogany case with line inlay, French stand.
Nameboard inscription in ink reads ‘Goulding Phipps & D’Almain ⁄ Music Sellers to Her Royal Highness The Princess of Whales(sic) ⁄ N° 45 Pall Mall, London ’. Apparently, the lady in question was indeed of generous proportions! This inscription is repeated in pencil on the rear of the nameboard, as instruction to the calligrapher.
This instrument is currently awaiting restoration.
